Colleges downplaying multimedia, pushing laptops for students

cNet’s News.com reports that many universities are encouraging students to buy laptops rather than desktops and to avoid using some of the next-generation operating systems. As more vendors pack desktop machines with high-end multimedia gaming perks, college officials are concerned that too many bells and whistles detract from the computer’s basic role in education.
