Chess finds its way into elementary education

The New York Times reports that many elementary schools are offering instruction in the game of chess because of its value as an educational tool, particularly in terms of developing problem-solving skills. A national nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting chess has helped these educational efforts by supplying schools with an interactive DVD called “First Move.” The DVD includes exercises that help children learn the rules of the game.
