Study: Public schools perform near private ones

The New York Times reports that a recently released study by the Education Department found that children in public schools performed as well or better in reading and mathematics than their private school counterparts. The report compared fourth and eighth grade reading and math scores from over 7,000 public schools and 530 private schools. It found that fourth graders in public schools performed better in math than comparable students at private schools. In addition, the study found that eighth graders at conservative Christian schools lagged significantly behind in math.
