Schools ban beef after video circulates

After a video showed employees from the Hallmark Meat Packing Company in Chino, Calif. torturing sick and injured cows, many school districts and chain restaurants have banned beef produced at that slaughterhouse.

New York City schools are among those to ban the meat, the New York City Department of Education said. According to BusinessWeek, chain restaurants Jack in the Box and In-N-Out also rejected the Chino beef.

The videos were released last Wednesday by the Humane Society of the United States. Workers from Hallmark and associated Westland Meat Company were seen kicking, electrically shocking, dragging and running forklifts into “downer” cows, or those too sick to walk.

U.S. Department of Agriculture regulations prohibit “downer” cows from being used for human food because they are more likely to carry diseases such as salmonella and E. coli.

Hannah Hodel, a CAS sophomore and vice president of the NYU group Students for Education on Animal Liberation, said she is happy to see New York City schools taking a stand but also said that it is important to realize the incident depicted in the video is not unique.
