Student spared expulsion over Facebook study group

The Windsor Star of Canada reports that a first-year Ryerson University student will not be expelled for running a Facebook study group, a disciplinary panel said in a decision released March 18. A lawyer for Chris Avenir, 18, said his client was relieved, but disappointed a faculty appeals committee ruled he committed academic misconduct when he ran a chemistry group on the online social networking site, where students swapped questions and were invited to "input solutions" to homework assignments. In its seven-page decision, the panel said that as an administrator of the Facebook group, Avenir played a role in "encouraging and allowing" students to join, "thus contributing to academic misconduct." Avenir and his supporters argued the online group was an extension of peer tutoring or mentoring and accused the university of acting like Luddites…
