University president teams with business community

Just over two months into the job, Wim Wiewel has made a big impression. The new president of Oregon’s biggest public university brings a high level of energy, preparation and insight to a job that demands a daunting combination of academic experience, political sophistication, and the ability to inspire legislators and donors, the Portland Business Journal reports. Wiewel is a perfect fit, say those who have gotten to know him since he started on Aug. 25. "He’s always prepared, he’s succinct, and he listens," said Rick Hawkins, partner and head of the tax practice at Portland accounting firm Geffen Mesher, and past president of the Portland State Foundation board. Hawkins said Wiewel has quickly absorbed Portland’s culture and business landscape and sees the university’s potential within the community. He’s also eager to connect with university, business and civic leaders.
