I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the kids taught the teachers how to use the devices! I handed an iPod to a kindergartner, with an alphabet learning app open. He played with that a bit, then checked to see what other "games" I had on it, and proceeded to try those.
Kids aren't afraid to just try things, unlike so many of us adults!

I allow 35 minutes of free-reading in all of my reading classes (8th grade) and realized that many of my students have e-readers on their iPod touches. I allow them to read from them and it is a complete hit. I would guess that about 20% of my students already own the device (or an iPhone) and they gladly download books when allowed to read them in class.

My students are already fervent readers, but this technology pushes them to read even more publicly as it is "cool" to read on a device=) I have also had a rash of students asking to bring Kindle's and Nook's that they received for Christmas...who would have thought that reading would be so boss?

This sounds intriguing. I would like to know how the district trained it's teachers to become proficient in using the devices and teaching the children to use them. In many schools aging faculty are not interested in utilizing technology.
