I handed an iPod to a kindergartner, with an alphabet learning app open. He played with that a bit, then checked to see what other "games" I had on it, and proceeded to try those. I allow them to read from them and it is a complete hit. I would guess that about 20% of my students already own the device (or an iPhone) and they gladly download books when allowed to read them in class.
