Press Release: EDINA PUBLIC SCHOOLS EXPAND USE OF LEXIA READING PROGRAM DISTRICT-WIDE

Software Predicts Student Outcomes, Prescribes Instructional Intensity, and Improves Each Student’s Reading Performance

BOSTON — September 29, 2011 — Lexia Learning Systems®, one of the nation’s most highly regarded providers of reading software, has announced an agreement with Edina (Minn.) Public Schools to expand use of Lexia Reading® district-wide. Lexia will provide Edina students with its breakthrough, technology-based reading curriculum that advances reading skills development for all students pre–K through grade 4, and intensifies and accelerates learning for at-risk students in grades 4–12. The program also includes an embedded assessment that gathers student performance data without administering a test. The system automatically predicts student performance on year-end, grade-level assessments and prescribes the appropriate lesson material and the minutes-per-week of software usage needed to improve each student’s performance.

Lexia Reading is a technology-based system of differentiated practice, embedded assessment and targeted instruction, designed as an essential component of every reading curriculum. The scalable, research-proven approach provides educators norm-referenced measures that help educators to prioritize the students who are the most at-risk, and provides them with teacher-led, direct skill instruction to address specific skill gaps.

As students work independently on Lexia Reading, they receive explicit, systematic and structured practice on foundational reading skills. Each of the age-appropriate, skill-specific activities conforms to federal guidelines and is aligned to Common Core State Standards. The fun, engaging software delivers scaffolded practice, advancing students to higher levels as they demonstrate proficiency.

Lexia Reading’s embedded assessment, known as Assessment Without Testing™ technology, provides real-time data on students’ specific skill gaps, as well as norm-referenced predictions of each student’s percent chance of reaching the end-of-year benchmark. The program then identifies and prioritizes students for small group or individual instruction, providing educators with targeted instructional strategies and structured lesson plans to help each student improve performance on grade-level assessments.

“By incorporating Lexia Reading, Edina Public Schools will be able to spend less time testing and more time teaching and learning,” said Lexia CEO Nick Gaehde. “Lexia allows educators to gather detailed, assessment-quality data without having to administer a test; representing a significant savings of time and money.”
