Press Release: Victory Taps Jim Chapman
Jim Chapman, previously the Editor-in-Chief for Language Arts and Bilingual Publications at Houghton Mifflin, joined Victory Productions as Editorial Director for Language Arts and Social Studies on April 16.
Programs developed under Jim’s leadership regularly won state adoptions for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
Victoria Porras, President of Victory Productions, said “Jim’s impressive record for bringing high-quality winning programs to market plus his knowledge of Common Core State Standards expands the depth and breadth of our English Language Arts and Social Studies departments.”
Highlights from Jim’s extensive catalog of successful products include:
• Houghton Mifflin Reading ©2000, 2001, and 2004 captured 85% of the California adoption in 2002.
• Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Journeys ©2011 achieved 43% market share in the Texas adoption. Prototyping was completed under Jim’s direction.
• Houghton Mifflin Leveled Readers ©2003 brought strong revenues to the company even as competing companies were giving away their readers.
• National Geographic Reach ©2011—earned 70% market share of the Texas ESL adoption. Jim consulted with the National Geographic team on the prototyping of student and teacher books, led the initial development of the program’s instructional design, and consulted on the content of teacher books.
Jim’s significant experience in Social Studies is represented by Houghton Mifflin’s 8th Grade American History, This Is America’s Story, and a 7th Grade Geography text.
Additionally, Jim developed Houghton Mifflin’s first computerized assessment program for language arts and reading. Recently, he led Victory’s ELL item-writing team in the development of bridge assessments between existing high-stakes tests and the coming tests aligned to Common Core State Standards.
