New York approves 4th charter school in controversial network

The New York State Board of Regents this week approved the application for the Utica Academy of Science Charter School [1], making it the fourth Gulen Movement-affiliated charter school in the state, the Huffington Post reports. The controversial network of charters [2] — the largest in the country — is run by followers of Fethullah Gulen [3], a prominent Turkish preacher who has inspired a worldwide religious, social and nationalistic movement. The Observer-Dispatch reports that the new charter school is slated to open next fall [4] and will serve 176 sixth through ninth graders. Student enrollment will increase as grades are added, and the school expects to reach 462 pupils by 2018.
