Press Release: Twin Cities Public Television and Mackin Announce PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest
BURNSVILLE, MINN (January 29, 2013) – Kids, it is time to sharpen those pencils and let your creativity flow. Twin Cities Public Television (tpt), in partnership with Mackin Educational Resources and other organizations, is sponsoring its first annual PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest for children in kindergarten through third grade. Designed to promote the advancement of children’s literacy skills through hands-on, active learning, the contest encourages kids to celebrate creativity by submitting their own original stories and illustrations.
From January 26 to March 29, 2013, children in the tpt viewing areas may submit their entries to Twin Cities Public Television in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Local winners will be announced at a celebration on April 20 where there will be live music, books, prizes, and an appearance by Monkey with a Tool Belt and Cookie, the Walker author Chris Monroe courtesy of Mackin Educational Resources. Four educators or librarians who submitted the winning students’ stories to tpt will receive $125 in books or other media from Mackin. Winners will be featured in the May issue of MN Parent Magazine as well as on air.
These student winners will go on to compete in the national contest, where a panel of America’s foremost children’s authors, illustrators, and content experts will serve as honorary judges to select winning entries. The top 12 will receive prizes and have their winning stories featured on www.pbskids.org/writerscontest.
“We’re happy to support such a worthwhile endeavor,” said Randal Heise, founder and owner of Mackin Educational Resources. “When an activity inspires creativity and a love of literacy in children, there are no losers.”
