– Together Counts™ Initiative Offers Annual Sweepstakes and Challenges to Provide Schools More than $140,000 in Prizes for Healthy Living Initiatives –
Silver Spring, Md. (September 4, 2013) – The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF), a CEO-led organization driving a national, multi-year effort designed to help reduce obesity – especially childhood obesity – by 2015, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content to K-12 classrooms, announced today the back-to-school launch of their dual-language Together Counts™ initiative encouraging educators, students and families to live active and healthy lives.
The back-to-school launch marks the return of two annual initiatives giving educators and students across the country the chance to win more than $140,000 in prizes for their schools. These include:
•Healthy Playground Makeover Sweepstakes: Administrators, teachers, parents and community members can enter this year’s Sweepstakes for a chance to win one of two grand prizes for their school, including $30,000 in cash and sporting goods and a new playground from Playworld Systems, Inc., a leading manufacturer of imaginative playground and fitness equipment. One of the grand prizes will be awarded to a school that qualifies for Title I funding. Three-second place schools will each win $5,000 in prizes.
•Find Your Balance Challenge: This Challenge is designed to encourage elementary school classrooms to create an action plan that takes steps toward achieving energy balance and improving physical education and nutrition at their school. Three schools will be awarded prizes based on the creativity and achievability of their plans. The grand prize winning school will receive $30,000 in cash and sporting goods and an Ultimate Energy Balance Party. The teacher/mentor of the grand prize winning team will receive a five-night stay in a two-bedroom suite provided by Wyndham® Extra Holidays valued at up to $2,420. The second place winning school will receive $10,000 in prizes and a third place-winning school will receive $5,000 in prizes.
“To drive change in America’s schools, the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation is excited to announce this year’s financial incentive programs,” said Lisa Gable, President, Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation. “Through our curriculum, family resources, and these incentives, we are dedicated to ensuring that school communities have the resources they need to create active and healthy environments for their students.”
“Discovery Education is thrilled to work alongside the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation to not only offer prizes that encourage active, healthy lifestyles but also to provide a dual language curriculum that reinforces the importance of this lifestyle beginning at a very early age,” said Mary Rollins, vice president, Discovery Education.
With the help of TogetherCounts.com, schools and families nationwide gain free access to funds and dual language resources that help to build healthy environments and reduce childhood obesity. The Together Counts initiative is a national campaign that promotes active, healthy living through energy balance – balancing the calories we consume with the calories we burn. The program focuses its efforts on two critical areas – families and schools. It provides tips, tools and incentives for parents, teachers and school health professionals to use in encouraging energy balance.
Juntos Contamos, the site’s Spanish language counterpart, complements its English companion by offering resources for both the home and school for K-5. Spanish-speaking families can utilize these resources to lead active, balanced lifestyles and connect what children are learning at school to their lives at home. Spanish-speaking classrooms can also take advantage of free Spanish versions of the entire K-5 Energy Balance 101 lesson plans featured on the English language site.
