BOSTON — Oct. 16, 2013 — Teacher effectiveness is among the most critical focus-areas for schools across the country, however, far too many schools limit their teacher effectiveness efforts to product-focused professional development. As a result, their teachers become familiar with the available resources for instruction, but the questions of “why” certain students need those resources and “when” those resources should be integrated into instruction remain unanswered. Written by Elizabeth Crawford-Brooke, Ph.D., Vice President of Education and Research for Lexia Learning, a Rosetta Stone Inc. (NYSE:RST) company, the recently-released white paper “Empowering Teacher Effectiveness: Five Key Factors for Success,” defines the steps that can help educators address the common obstacles to effective instruction.

“Teachers’ effectiveness depends on their ability to analyze assessment data and make the connections to the appropriate resources that support the next step in the instructional process,” said Crawford-Brooke. “Considering the massive amounts of performance data that most schools compile, teachers often face a daunting task of determining how the data should affect their instructional plans.”

“Five Key Factors for Success” explains how to empower teachers via a shared and clear understanding of core instructional materials, the creation of in-depth profiles of student ability, the use of data to establish instructional priorities, the delivery of research-based interventions, and the consistent execution of the established processes.

The white paper encourages educators to devise and implement processes inspired by the following questions:

1. Do teachers understand the pedagogy and how to effectively use the instructional materials?
2. Which assessments will clearly define the profile of student ability and trajectory?
3. What is the assessment data telling you?
4. Have you incorporated the right instructional materials for each student’s individual needs?

Crawford-Brooke added, “Schools will dramatically improve teacher effectiveness when teachers are able to connect the dots to achieve a comprehensive processes aligning student data to the appropriate instructional strategies and resources. And, when schools and districts make a commitment to this kind of approach, everyone benefits—teachers, students, administrators and the entire school community.”
