The words and phrases we in the education biz love to hate

words-education For those critics who say education moves at a snail’s pace, they’re wrong…at least when it comes to terminology. From buzz words to phrases speakers love to use, it seems there’s a whole new vocabulary—that some call “edubabble”—developed every couple of years.

As education editors, managing editor Laura Devaney and I come across these buzz words frequently, especially over our eight-plus years reporting on education. Now, we’d like to share these words with you, our education-savvy readers!

Each buzz word or phrase is one we’ve either groaned over after attending a large-scale conference (where every story is littered with “edubabble”), or is one we think was pretty neat…at least while it lasted.

How about KUDs? A week or so ago I was reading an online article that was laced with this term, (know, understand, do) but hadn’t included a first reference to explain it. Most frustrating.

How about a word I facilitated the invention of: benestrophi – a Latin-reek forced marriage of turn to the good. IMHO: “best practices” that take ten years to are research and then get adopted are useless compared to emerging practices.

I have a new one for you. How about “Learning Quotient” or “Learning Intelligence”, LQ for short. I admit to developing the phrase to describe a type of learning journey where the learner is able to manage their learning environment to meet their own learning needs. Thank you. Actually very helpful. Next exercise is to separate those that should go extinct because using and following them is unhelpful. and make a list of those that should remain as guiding lights. For instance, I would love it if it became obsolete to talk about project-based learning because everyone was doing it and it was a true cliche. I would also love it if we dropped “data driven” until we are all measuring what matters and keeping data on that.
