SMART Aligns with Google to Create Software Solution for Education

• SMART amp™ software hosted on Google Cloud Platform™ extends collaborative technologies
• Platform enables students and teachers to work seamlessly on displays, smartphones, laptops and tablets
• Software offers universal access to content for cohesive learning

Calgary, Alberta — November 22, 2013 — SMART Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: SMT) (TSX: SMA), has aligned with Google Inc. to create a comprehensive software solution for education that brings people, student devices and learning environments together. SMART amp™ collaborative learning software is a revolutionary, cloud-based solution hosted on the Google cloud that takes advantage of Google’s newest cloud services. It is the ‘glue’ that connects interactive displays, PCs, laptops, tablets and smartphones while enabling teachers and students to collaborate in real time, do in-class assessment, connect to shared digital workspaces and interact with Web-based learning materials regardless of location or device. The integration with Google cloud services ensures simple, cost-effective deployment and eliminates costs associated with supporting numerous proprietary operating systems and applications.

“Our teachers are grappling with how to work with different devices and ensure a consistent experience for all their students with universal access to curriculum content. A cloud-based solution like SMART amp will be essential in bringing these devices and platforms together into one cohesive learning environment,” says Bobby Blount, Assistant Superintendent of Accountability, Technology and Strategic Planning, Cherokee County School District, “We like the direction that SMART is moving in.”

According to a recent paper, “Have You Gone Google?” by White Stratus, 58 percent of the education sector has adopted at least one product from Google Apps, and Google Apps for Education is used by 30 million students, faculty and staff worldwide. SMART has over 20 years of history in creating solutions that support collaborative teaching and learning. Today more than 2.4 million SMART Board® interactive displays are used by over 50 million students and their teachers, and SMART software is used in more than 175 countries around the world.

Teachers and students log in to SMART amp software through their Google ID from any web browser. SMART amp software is integrated with Google Drive, allowing educators to share lesson materials with their class and students to share content with each other.

“SMART amp software is a powerful new platform for education that offers rich, collaborative teaching and learning experiences – providing new tools, an intuitive user interface and unlimited access to digital content,” says Warren Barkley, Chief Technology Officer for SMART Technologies. “Google app fabric and cloud services have given us the means to offer this revolutionary software and deploy it simply and quickly.”

SMART amp collaborative learning software will be available in commercial release in April 2014 and is now in early stage trials in a number of schools. For more information, visit smarttech.com/cloud.
