Press Release: Maine Connections Academy, First Statewide Virtual Public School Opens Enrollment for the 2014–15 School Year
Scarborough, ME (April 7, 2014) – Maine Connections Academy (MCA), the state’s first full-time, tuition-free virtual public charter school for students in grades 7–12 across Maine, is now enrolling students for the 2014-15 school year and has begun the search for a highly-qualified and experienced individual to lead as the school’s principal. The school will open this September and can enroll up to 297 students from anywhere in the state. The initial enrollment period is from April 5 to May 5, 2014. A lottery will be held on May 12, 2014, if grades in the school are oversubscribed. Families interested in learning more are invited to attend an online or in-person information session – a complete list of events will soon be available on the school’s website.
Maine Connections Academy will combine certified teachers, an award-winning curriculum, technology tools, engaging electives, and social experiences to create a supportive and successful online learning program for families and students who want an individualized approach to education. As a public charter school, there are no fees or tuition to attend the school and all students are required to take the same state assessments as traditional Maine students.
“This is an exciting moment for Maine – we’ve expanded the public school options for our students with an innovative and quality online school,” said Amy Volk, Board Chair of Maine Connections Academy. “The truth is, not all children succeed in the traditional classroom. I know my family would have benefited from this school and it’s rewarding to hear from others who are thankful for the choice, eager to enroll because of the flexibility and personalization the school will offer. I really encourage families to attend an information session to learn what a virtual school is all about and see if it is right for their family.”
Maine Connections Academy is governed by a board composed of Maine residents and its curriculum and other services are contracted through Connections Education, a leading provider of high-quality, highly accountable online learning. The governing board is responsible for hiring the school’s principal who will work from a teaching facility in the Scarborough area to lead overall school operations, working with parents, students, support staff and certified teachers.
All Maine Connections Academy students will participate in the nationally accredited Connections Academy program that combines high-quality resources from leading publishers with cutting-edge, yet easy-to-use, online technology tools and hands-on materials. Learning from home, MCA students will work closely with certified teachers using detailed daily lesson plans that can be personalized to meet individual student needs. A parent, or another adult “Learning Coach,” monitors progress in the home.
A virtual school serves a wide variety of students, including those who are significantly ahead or behind in the classroom, those who need a flexible schedule or learn at a different pace from their peers, and those who need more individualized attention or live in rural settings. Homebound and previously home-schooled students can also thrive in Maine Connections Academy.
