Press Release: DreamBox Learning Launches Middle School Math Curriculum
BELLEVUE, Wash. (May 13, 2014) – DreamBox Learning (www.dreambox.com) today announced the availability of DreamBox Learning Math for Middle School, an expanded curriculum offering with more than 350 new lessons designed for students in grades 6-8. This extension of DreamBox Learning’s award-winning, adaptive curriculum for elementary and middle school students supports teachers and students with instructional technology that delivers personalized, student-driven learning experiences.
According to a 2013 report by the National Center for Education Statistics, just 36 percent of eighth-graders performed at the “proficient” or “advanced” level in mathematics on the National Assessment of Educational Progress assessments, with the remaining 64 percent only meeting the “basic” or “below basic” criteria. This gap in achievement reinforces the need for curriculum tools that ensure student not only achieve grade-level standards, but are also prepared for advanced mathematics.
“Elementary students take a hands-on, creative approach to math, and we believe that level of engagement shouldn’t stop when students enter middle school,” said Jessie Woolley-Wilson, president and CEO of DreamBox Learning. “Our interactive, adaptive approach ensures students play an active role in their learning that builds a deep understanding and love of math that sets them up to become not only great mathematicians, but great thinkers now and later in life.”
A 2012 study in The Qualitative Report found middle school students seek active, student-driven learning environments where they can engage with hands-on manipulatives and technology that foster independence and understanding. DreamBox Learning’s Intelligent Adaptive Learning™ Technology delivers an interactive and personal learning experience middle schoolers engage with, enabling their continued success in mathematics— regardless of prior knowledge and performance. Based on analysis of the student’s demonstrated understanding and learning, DreamBox Learning adapts content, pace and sequence to provide a learning pathway and appropriate support. This, combined with a highly engaging and motivating environment, cultivates deep conceptual understanding of algebraic concepts, the ability to think critically and life-long confidence in math.
“In middle school, we see students express a growing need for independence and the desire to take more control over their learning. With DreamBox Learning Math, our teachers can quickly establish an understanding of a student’s ability and ensure there’s a tailored instructional program in place that is appropriate for that particular student,” said mSchool founder Elliot Sanchez. “This student-directed approach allows students to focus on their zone of proximal development.”
DreamBox Learning Math for Middle School includes topics such as ratios, geometry, one-variable equations and basic functions, aligned to the Common Core domains and clusters. DreamBox Learning aids and supports teachers by complementing existing curriculum, meeting students’ academic needs and helping them progress at their own pace. This expansion of the current curriculum offering will support the needs of advanced elementary learners and learners of all ages who can benefit from understanding algebra by using DreamBox Learning’s self-paced, adaptive lessons and continuous embedded assessments.
“Middle school is a particularly difficult transition in math as algebra has typically been a ‘gatekeeper’ subject where students can’t simply rely on tricks and memorized procedures.” said Dr. Tim Hudson, senior curriculum director for DreamBox Learning. “A deep understanding of algebra concepts establishes part of the essential foundation students need to be successful in mathematics and science. Developing algebraic habits of mind enables students to model situations and work with information they know in order to solve for what they don’t know.”
DreamBox Learning Math for Middle School is available now for implementation at the start of the 2014-2015 school year. For more information or to get DreamBox Learning Middle School Math for your school, please visit http://www.dreambox.com/sixth-grade-math-lessons.
