Press Release: Actor and Humanitarian Ashley Judd to Deliver ISTE 2014 Opening Keynote

Biggest EdTech Conference Slated for June 28 – July 1 in Atlanta

WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 20, 2014 – The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE®) announced today that acclaimed actor and global humanitarian, Ashley Judd, will give the opening keynote at ISTE 2014. Actor America Ferrera, previously scheduled to speak, is unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict.

Part idea incubator and part collaborative workspace, the ISTE annual conference, to be held June 28 – July 1 at the Georgia World Conference Center in Atlanta, is the epicenter of forward-thinking where educators share discoveries and develop solutions for their greatest challenges – all while connecting to a global network of education resources.

Judd, who will deliver the opening keynote on Saturday, June 28, has starred in more than 20 films, as well as on Broadway and television. She was recently seen in “Divergent” and has four new films coming out soon, including “Dolphin Tale 2;” Big Stone Gap,” based on the bestselling book; “Insurgent,” based on the bestselling trilogy; and “The Identical,” a lyrical study on what could have happened if Elvis Presley’s twin had survived infancy. Her numerous credits include starring roles in “Double Jeopardy,” “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood,” “De-Lovely” and “Ruby in Paradise,” which won the Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury prize. Judd has also performed in independent dramas such as “Come Early Morning,” “Bug,” and “Helen,” and on Broadway as Madge in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Picnic,” and Maggie in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”

Her humanitarian work includes serving as a board member, advocate and activist for poverty alleviation, public health, human rights and social justice. Judd has visited grassroots programs around the world, carrying the message of empowerment and equality to heads of state, donors, the private sector and the media. She has spoken up against modern slave trade to the 2008 General Assembly of the United Nations; testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the urgent need to prevent the spread of HIV to girls and women; and supported three documentaries seen by over a billion people worldwide. She has served as an expert panelist/moderator at conferences such as the Clinton Global Initiative, the Women Deliver Conference, the International AIDS conference and the Global Business Coalition to stop HIV, tuberculosis and malaria.

A graduate of the University of Kentucky, Judd earned a master’s of public administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

On Monday, June 30, Kevin Carroll, author of “Rules of the Red Rubber Ball,” will deliver the second keynote of the conference and on Tuesday, July 1, 2013 National Teacher of the Year, Jeffrey Charbonneau, will close ISTE 2014.
