Press Release: ISTE and the Verizon Foundation Launch Free Mobile Learning Academy for Educators
School Teams Can Apply Now for September Kick-Off; Earn CEUs From The Johns Hopkins University School of Education
ATLANTA – June 30, 2014 – The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE®) and the Verizon Foundation today announced a new mobile learning program. The Verizon Foundation and ISTE will collaborate to develop and implement the Verizon Mobile Learning Academy (VMLA), a virtual professional learning program designed to help school teams of teachers, tech coaches and administrators prepare for successfully integrating mobile technology into learning and teaching.
In addition, ISTE and the Verizon Foundation are working with The Johns Hopkins University School of Education Center for Technology in Education (CTE) to develop the curriculum for the VMLA program. The initiative will provide selected educator teams across the country with a series of free, moderated virtual professional development modules aligned to the ISTE Standards that will earn participants Continuing Education Units from The Johns Hopkins University School of Education.
The creation of the Verizon Mobile Learning Academy builds on the foundation of the success of the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools (VILS) program, focusing on professional development and mobile integration in the classroom.
“Our long-standing collaboration with Verizon provides support for teachers around the country as they pioneer the use of mobile technology in the classroom,” ISTE Chief Innovation Officer Wendy Drexler. “With the launch of the Verizon Mobile Learning Academy, teams of educators will work together to make the pedagogical and cultural change necessary to leverage mobile technology to improve and accelerate student learning.”
Developed for administrators, classroom teachers and technology coaches, the facilitated, five-module program will be delivered online and offered four times during the 2014-2015 school year. This free professional learning program is aligned with the ISTE Standards for learning, teaching and leading in the digital age. It will focus on:
Evaluating and planning for mobile learning landscape
Developing digital fluency
Embedding classroom technology
Implementing effective mobile practices
Modeling safe online practices for students aligned with the ISTE Standards
“Given the promising results of our VILS initiative, and as part of our ConnectED commitment, Verizon is extending the success of our professional development model through this online academy,” said Rose Kirk, President of the Verizon Foundation. “This unprecedented online professional development program for teachers on the effective integration of mobile technology will reach up to 3,000 teachers in all 50 states over the next three years.”
A recently released study of the VILS initiative revealed that students in VILS schools showed stronger gains in mathematics than students from comparison schools, even when mobile technology use was similar. Standardized test scores in math of students participating in the program increased by 4.13 percent, while control group test scores declined by 4.62 percent. Additionally, 60 percent of the teachers reported that mobile technology enabled them to provide more one-on-one instruction, and 47 percent said they are spending less time lecturing.
ISTE is inviting school teams from across the continental United States to apply to participate in the first phase of the program. School teams are made up of one school administrator, one tech coach or equivalent and five to eight teachers. The VMLA will be offered online four times between September 2014 and December 2015. Interested teams can pre-register online at http://www.iste.org/VMLA.
