School grants offer much-needed financial help for schools

october-grantSchool funding continues to present a challenge to school leaders, with budgets seemingly stretched to the limit. Many educators and administrators rely on school grants to fund important projects and opportunities for students.

Each month, eSchool News compiles a list of the most current education grants expiring soon–from a focus on STEM education to funding for student learning design. You don’t want to miss out on these school funding opportunities for teachers, students, parents, and administrators.

STEM+ Academy

This program helps students build the skills they need to succeed in college and the highly competitive 21st-century workforce. NEF’s unique high-quality, cost-effective total solution grant program provides disadvantaged school districts an opportunity to enhance the STEM+ skills of their students. To date, NEF has provided STEM+ and Math Homework Helper grants to more than 250 school districts across the U.S. Any school district with at least 35 percent of its students eligible for free/reduced price lunch is eligible.

Vernier/NSTA Technology Awards

This grant promotes the innovative use of data-collection technology using a computer, graphing calculator, or other handheld in the science classroom. The program encourages K-college science teachers to apply for one of seven $5,500 awards. The Vernier Technology Awards will recognize and reward the innovative use of data-collection technology using a computer, graphing calculator, or other handheld in the science classroom.

Canvas Grants

Have you ever wished you could transform education by empowering teachers and students to learn and do more? For the second year in a row, we’re granting your most inspired wishes for K-12 and higher education with Canvas Grants totaling $100k. And this year, we’re investing 100 percent of that $100k for your 15 most innovative ideas to help find, understand, and address the causes of lossy learning. As part of Canvas’ lossless learning initiative, we’re challenging you to find new ways to maximize student learning potential. You find an innovative solution to help teachers and students move toward lossless learning. We’ll fund it with 10 grants of $5K for K-12 and five grants of $10K for higher ed.

Serious STEM Games for Pre-College and Informal Science Education Audiences

This program aims to provide opportunities for eligible small business concerns to submit SBIR grant applications to develop serious STEM games with a focus on biology that addresses health and medicine questions for: (1) pre-kindergarten to grade 12 (P-12) students and pre- and in-service teachers or (2) Informal Science Education (ISE) audiences. Serious games are defined as the use of gaming technology to train, educate, and encourage behavioral changes in a virtual world format where progressive learning, feedback on success and user control are combined into an interactive and engaging experience. It is anticipated that this SBIR opportunity will facilitate the translation of new or existing health and medicine-based, P-12 STEM curricula and museum exhibits into educational games that will provide a hands-on, inquiry-based and learning-by-doing experience for students, teachers and the community.

Advancing Informal STEM Learning

This funding program seeks to advance new approaches to and evidence-based understanding of the design and development of STEM learning in informal environments for public and professional audiences; provide multiple pathways for broadening access to and engagement in STEM learning experiences; advance innovative research on and assessment of STEM learning in informal environments; and develop understandings of deeper learning by participants. Whether for personal satisfaction, professional advancement, or fulfilling learning requirements for pre-K through graduate and professional education, greater possibilities for accessing and understanding informal education are emerging through increased access to STEM learning anywhere and anytime. These personalized learning options and participatory learning environments are also expanding and broadening participation in STEM and blurring many distinctions between formal and informal learning settings. Many of these changes are related directly or indirectly to the pervasiveness and accessibility of digital technologies. AISL invites proposals that: address immediate challenges and opportunities in informal education; anticipate radically different structures, functions, and purposes of informal STEM education; challenge existing assumptions about learning and learning
environments; and envision the future needs of diverse learners, educators, and STEM professionals in this nation.
