School enables high-speed testing for 2,350 students

New Jersey high school was searching for a way to implement a high-speed, computer-based testing solution

testing-speedWatchung Hills Regional High School has implemented VMware Horizon with Atlantis USX™ VDI storage solution to enable computer-based testing and deliver high-speed desktops to any device. Watchung Hills Regional High School selected Atlantis for its scalability, performance and management capabilities.

The school was searching for desktop and storage solutions to sustain its performance requirements and meet cost-effective criteria.

Watchung Hills Regional High School (WHRHS) has fostered student-owned devices and high-quality Wi-Fi connections for years. When selected as a beta site for the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) online testing regimen, the school needed a VDI deployment to preserve device independence and support PARCC’s security requirements.

WHRHS started with 10 users in 2012, but experienced significant storage IO bottlenecks within 6 months due to expansion – halting VDI expansion. They needed an innovative way to grow storage capacity without budget increases and respond quickly and effectively to configuration changes.

With its Atlantis software-defined storage implementation, WHRHS is performing standardized PARCC testing without a hitch while enabling secure, fast Windows desktop access from home or public WiFi. No further storage hardware is required and software delivery and migration is instantaneous.

WHRHS credits the Atlantis 100 percent software solution for providing:
• Scalability – 1,000 concurrent virtual desktops using existing attached storage, avoiding the purchase and deployment of additional storage while minimizing the capacity required to sustain and deploy desktop images
• Performance – faster-than-PC performance, near-instant application launch, fast login times significantly improving end user experience over existing PCs; with the Atlantis solution, a standard, high performance desktop is now available to students and staff, on any device from any location
• Management – Atlantis USX with VMware Horizon enables rapid, low-cost deployment of new Windows 7 desktops to support the school’s standardized testing environment and provide instant, automated response to configuration changes

“We compared Atlantis with traditional storage vendors, but they would not scale as easily,” said Andy Bohl, IT Manager at WHRHS. “With Atlantis, we were able to expand from 10 to thousands of desktops without any additional hardware.”
