For Earth Day, 9 Discovery Education resources (and a virtual field trip)


School resources and a field trip in time for Earth Day

earth-dayIn recognition of Earth Day (April 22), Discovery Education is hosting a virtual field trip and offering additional multimedia resources on climate, geography, and biology.

On Thursday, April 23, Discovery Education and the Nutrients for Life Foundation will host the live virtual field trip, called “Live From the Farm-Technology, Soil Science and More” for students nationwide. Designed to give middle school students a deeper understanding of the important role science and soil nutrients play in agriculture, this virtual event will explore the connections between nutrients, plants and crops, and provide a real-world look at the various critical thinking skills, technologies and scientific practices used during the harvest and planting seasons.

Additionally, Discovery Education is offering a variety of Earth Day-related activities available through Discovery Education Streaming and Discovery Education Science Techbook.

Earth Day Content Collection (a Discovery login is needed to access these links)- A rich collection of multimedia assets centered around Earth Day. Through these programs, students will get an exclusive look at our planet’s wildlife, geography and ecosystem, and explore concepts such as climate change and conservation efforts. Grades: K-2; 3-5; 6-8; 9-12.

Earth Day Chesapeake Cleanup Affects Nation – This program available through Discovery Education Streaming, evaluates the condition of the Chesapeake Bay to reveal how pollution affects the watershed. The program profiles the efforts of local citizens to help clean up the Chesapeake Bay area, and discusses the roles of the government and citizens in the environmental crisis. Grades: 6-8; 9-12.

Weather Things: Climate and Climate Change – This segment available through Discovery Education Streaming details the effects of natural and human-caused climate change, including a profile on carbon dioxide and the warming oceans. Go in-depth on the process of measuring climate change, the effort required to predict changes in the future, and how to keep the earth in balance. Grades 6-8.

United States: NASA Arctic Research Flights – Available through Discovery Education Streaming and Science Techbook, this program provides an inside look at how NASA monitors changing sea levels in the Arctic. Grades: K-2; 3-5.

United States: Earth’s Hottest Year on Record – Through this program available through Discovery Education Streaming and Science Techbook, students will see The NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies announce that 2014 ranked as the hottest year on record. Grades: K-2; 3-5.

Reviewing the Structure of the Atmosphere – Available through Discovery Education Streaming and Science Techbook, this segment explores the layers of the atmosphere: the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, exosphere, and ionosphere. The program also provides an in-depth look at the composition of the ozone layer and the auroras. Grades: 9-12.

Discovery Science Alliance: How Plants Live and Grow – Available through Science Techbook, this series showcases the life cycle of plants and provides an introduction to the process of photosynthesis. The program also challenges students of the Science Alliance Academy to think about how life on Earth would be different without the existence of plants. Grades K-2; 3-5.

The Water Cycle – Available through Science Techbook, this program explores the process of the water cycle: nature’s way of recycling water. The program features evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. Grades: K-2; 3-5.

Science in Progress: Impacts of Global Warming – This program available through Science Techbook evaluates the impact of Earth’s warming temperature, and predicts how global warming will affect the world’s future populations. Grades: 9-12.
