New app is intended for on-the-go learning

student-appCengage Learning announced the availability of the iOS and Android compatible MindTap Mobile app. Developed based on student feedback, MindTap Mobileallows students to access many features of Cengage Learning’s MindTap e-learning platform directly from their smartphones.

“MindTap Mobile offers the tools students tell us they want and need to be successful in the classroom, and delivers them in a way that seamlessly integrates into their lifestyle,” said Jim Donohue, Chief Product Officer at Cengage Learning.

Cengage Learning’s MindTap is a fully built course experience that integrates reading, homework, quizzing, multi-media assets and more. Using MindTap Mobile helps on-the-go students stay organized, optimize small pockets of study time and interact directly with their instructor. This elevated connectivity allows for improved student workflow, greater customization and more visibility into individual progress. Informed by feedback directly from students, MindTap Mobile encompasses features that align with the needs of today’s learners.

“We set out to create a mobile product that adapts to students’ busy lives outside of the classroom,” said MindTap Product Director Jared Mann. “MindTap Mobile represents a subset of the MindTap experience that students told us would be most useful to have available right from their phone. We also developed all new features, such as the flashcard-based Practice Quizzes for the app as a result of our research. We interviewed dozens of students and surveyed thousands to help clarify what they valued most in a mobile app. We are proud to deliver this initial release and look forward to delivering new and innovative features going forward.”

Key features of MindTap Mobile:

Course Notifications: Students can set due date reminders for all of their activities and assignments. They can also receive notifications when due dates change, scores are updated or when their instructor sends them a message. According to Cengage Learning research, messaging and notifications were reported to be valuable tools by 89 percent of students.

Flashcards: Each chapter in MindTap Mobile comes with pre-loaded flashcards. Students can also make additional flashcards of their own and access flashcards their instructor has shared with the class.

Practice Quizzes: Students are able to access pre-built quizzes or generate a self-quiz from any flashcard deck. The quizzing feature is designed to optimize even the smallest pockets of time allowing students to use free time for short but effective study sessions.

Recent efficacy studies conducted by independent research firms found that students using the MindTap digital learning solution achieved significantly higher grades across a number of disciplines. MindTap Mobile encompasses features from the MindTap platform that most directly align with the needs of today’s students. For example, student surveys showed that the ability to study course material in a gamified quiz was a highly valued feature and practice quizzing ranked the most popular study tool.

Different from competitors’ mobile offerings, MindTap Mobile works with any MindTap course so students do not need multiple apps to manage multiple courses. Cengage Learning now has MindTap products for over 520 courses spanning more than 50 disciplines. New releases of MindTap Mobile will be rolled out with the mission of providing students and instructors with more connectivity, clearer communication, increased flexibility – and ultimately and most importantly – better outcomes.
