Mountain View, Calif. (Feb. 6, 2012) – Mathematicians have a certain reputation. No, not that kind of reputation. Think Revenge of the Nerds, complete with suspenders and pocket protectors. Yet statisticians are responsible for tracking professional baseball players’ on-base percentages, analyzing the nets and grosses from feature films, and measuring the marketability of video games from region to region. Those are all pretty cool jobs, so maybe not all mathematicians are quite as geeky as we might suspect.

…Nah, nice try. We’re pretty much all nerds. But at least we revel in our nerdiness.

To help bring out the nerd in you, Shmoop, a publisher of digital curriculum and test prep, introduces a brand new AP Statistics guide, which is guaranteed to fill your brain to the brim with all sorts of statistical data and know-how. Without Shmoop’s help, you would have only have a 64.872 percent chance of passing your AP Statistics final. Approximately, that is.

Shmoop can teach you:

Why statistics are like bikinis. Yes, statisticians are generally concerned with bigger numbers, but we think they might be interested in a two-piece or two.

How a limitless supply of Skittles can help you taste the rainbow – er, spot patterns. Like why your eyeballs keep twitching on the mornings you eat a healthy breakfast of Skittles and Pepsi.

Why you can’t conduct experiments on your younger siblings without knowing the appropriate confidence interval. On the other hand, you can be 100 percent confident that you’ll be grounded for at least a week if you do turn them into guinea pigs.

How Facebook knows about your burning love for Bruce Springsteen. Not that the body paint and foam finger gave anything away, of course.

What statistical bias, mushrooms and chaperones have in common. Aside from the fact that we don’t want any of them on our pizza.

Let Shmoop’s AP Stats guide turn you into a complete datahead. Check it out, stat.

CROCKETT INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT PARTNERS WITH HATCH TO BRING INNOVATIVE EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY TO PRE-K AND KINDERGARTEN TO ACCELERATE STAAR READINESS
Hatch’s Research-based, Classroom Technology Solutions Help Ensure Students Are On Target
For Meeting Rigorous Literacy Goals

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Crockett Early Childhood Center, of the Crockett Independent School District, has partnered with Hatch®, a leading provider of technology for early learning, to bring award-winning technology solutions proven effective in increasing literacy and math outcomes to its pre-K and kindergarten classrooms. The installation of Hatch’s cutting-edge technology systems in the Crockett Early Childhood Center represents a commitment to supporting its youngest students with proven tools for engaging children and building critical skills for STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness), as well as providing a strong educational foundation to ensure future success.

Crockett Early Childhood Center installed Hatch’s TeachSmart® interactive whiteboard learning system in its six kindergarten classrooms and iStartSmart® all-in-one, touch screen computers in its two pre-K classrooms at the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year. In January 2012, Crockett Early Childhood Center also installed Hatch’s new CoreFocus™ interactive whiteboard learning system for K-1 in its kindergarten classrooms.

“Hatch’s technology systems offered us a bright new avenue to open the imaginations of and engage our young learners in order to build vocabulary and accelerate their proficiency levels; thus pushing for emerging reading skills to come forward at an earlier point in their lives,” said Jeannie Julian, special education director for Crockett Independent School District (ISD). “The children love to interact with the technology, which means they are eager to participate and receptive to teaching.”

Education Technology Systems Spark Learning, Build Skills & Track Progress
At the end of last school year, approximately 50 percent of Crockett Early Childhood Center’s kindergarteners went on to first grade unable to read. The Hatch education technology systems contain research-based activities, tied to STAAR standards, and proven effective in increasing literacy and math outcomes. The content-rich systems build the crucial skills these students need to meet literacy goals for the end of their kindergarten year and be on target for STAAR assessments.

“Hatch has provided excellent tools to help us significantly move the bar in building vocabulary, comprehension and other literacy skills in our pre-K and kindergarten classrooms – taking us from less than 50 percent able to read when they entered first grade, to the majority of kindergarteners reading by the second quarter of the school year,” said Deborah Revels, principal of Crockett Early Childhood Center. “The Hatch systems’ progress monitoring and reporting have been key to meeting the ambitious goals we’ve set and have helped us achieve these goals at an even greater speed than we anticipated.”

A patented login designed for pre-readers allows children to independently access the iStartSmart Computer Learning System. The system provides more than 500 interactive activities that develop proficiency in 18 skill areas that early childhood research shows will lead to kindergarten readiness. iStartSmart identifies the skills students have mastered and where they need more help, automatically moving them to the next level. Individualized performance reports are tied to each child’s login and provide automated, standards-based progress monitoring for every student in the class.

The TeachSmart Learning System contains more than 1,100 research-based lesson plan activities for early learners, pre-loaded onto a Hatch computer with a SMART™ Board interactive whiteboard that correlate with state and national standards. The first research study to evaluate the effectiveness of interactive whiteboard technology in preschools was recently released and showed that the TeachSmart system can significantly improve math and early literacy learning outcomes.

CoreFocus by Hatch|SMART™ is a new content solution designed to work within SMART Notebook™ software for cognitive ages 4-8, featuring complete lessons for kindergarten through first grade students. CoreFocus includes more than 2,500 math and literacy activities aligned to Common Core State Standards, scaffolded for various skill levels, with built-in individualized lesson planning and individual digital portfolios for easy progress monitoring to support assessments.

“Hatch is excited to provide Crockett Early Childhood Center with innovative technology solutions designed to improve learning outcomes for young students and provide a strong foundation for future learning,” said Ginny Norton, president of Hatch. “All of Hatch’s education technology solutions are research-based solutions that enable schools to meet student goals and thus maximize their technology return on investment.”

About Hatch®, The Early Learning Experts:
Since 1984, Hatch has been committed to supporting the needs of students and enriching early education. From classroom supplies and education materials, to interactive whiteboard content, to adaptive learning and mobile technology, Hatch® is the innovative solutions leader and most widely-used early learning technology provider nationwide. Hatch technologies combine child-appropriate hardware, research-based content tied to standards, and individualized progress monitoring tools, to create complete classroom solutions proven to increase math, literacy and social/emotional development. In addition, Revolabs has taken valued feedback from its customers and created several new features for the HD line, including a DIP switch display, mute groups for Executive HD systems, and an expanded control system API.

With the HD Control Panel, users can monitor and control networked HD wireless microphone systems from a single PC software program with an intuitive graphical user interface. The HD Control Panel allows users to control the mute status and gain of each microphone, and to lock out presenters from using the mute button. The software also provides the ability to monitor each microphone closely for its real-time status, such as battery level.

The monitor tab of the HD Control Panel has been enhanced to provide the DIP switch status for each system, eliminating the need to look on the back of the system to see which switches are active. Revolabs has also added several commands to the HD systems’ API, allowing A/V control systems to send global commands, turn off microphones, and even initiate pairing, all from the convenience of a room’s touchpanel. Finally, Revolabs has bolstered the Executive HD with the ability to assign systems to mute groups. This allows all systems in a building to be bussed together without muting each other, unless they are assigned to the same group.

“We are pleased to bring the capabilities of the HD Control Panel to users of our HD Single/Dual Channel and HD Venue systems, in addition to offering powerful new features across our entire HD line,” said JP Carney, CEO of Revolabs. “We take pride in listening to our customers as we continually strive to meet their evolving needs. New features, such as those released today, are a direct result of customer feedback.”

The enhanced HD Control Panel and new features are available through a firmware update (version 2.6.1) to both the base station and microphones. The update is available now at www.revolabs.com/downloads. New feature enhancements require a Gold unlock code provided as part of a Revolabs service plan. Any system that has previously been unlocked will automatically receive the new features upon completion of the firmware upgrade. Support questions may be directed to support@revolabs.com.

Award-Winning PCI Reading Program Develops Word Analysis, Decoding Skills

San Antonio (Feb. 8, 2012) – PCI Education, the premier provider of resources for students with special instructional needs, announces the launch of PCI Reading Program-Level Three Software, a new online component to the award-winning PCI Reading Program, a reading series for students with intellectual disabilities. Designed to complement the print edition of Level Three, Level Three Software delivers interactive lessons to help students master decoding through a suite of engaging virtual games. The online, subscription-based software covers the same concepts presented in print and focuses on building phonemic awareness and phonic skills.

Designed to support and enhance the basic word-decoding skills taught in its print counterpart, Level Three Software follows the same lesson pedagogy while presenting skills in a different format. This double layering promotes deeper understanding and helps students generalize newly learned capabilities. Students are guided through the program with positive reinforcement and praise from a narrator. According to PCI Education President and CEO Lee Wilson, the new online component will play a pivotal role in supporting students with special needs as they master essential reading and writing skills.

“Providing students with the opportunity to engage with the material and apply their skills online is a crucial element to effective reading instruction,” said Wilson. “With this latest release, PCI Education now offers a technology component for each of the three levels of the PCI Reading Program, fulfilling our company’s goal of blending cutting-edge technology and traditional curriculum to benefit students with special needs.”

In addition to the games, Level Three Software contains a digital library of the 10 fiction and 10 nonfiction books used in the print edition. Special features include highlighted text and picture support, and each book is accompanied by comprehension activities and practice in fluency. The software component also offers modified writing opportunities not available in print. “For many students with cognitive disabilities, writing is a challenging task,” said Wilson. “Level Three Software provides students with support to further develop their writing skills.”

PCI Reading Program-Level Three Software offers both formative and summative assessments. The program delivers assessments for prescriptive placement, progress monitoring, and skills mastery. Teachers can enter scores and anecdotal notes for any activities completed away from the computer. All scores can then be reviewed or printed out for use in parent conferences or for annual achievement reporting. These assessments enable teachers to individualize instruction for each student and document progress in mastering skills.

As a three-level system with print and software editions at each level, the PCI Reading Program helps students with intellectual disabilities learn how to read. The program has been carefully designed to guide students step by step to reading success and independence. Students begin Level One focused on learning high-frequency words through visual discrimination. Phonemic awareness and phonics are slowly layered in so that by Level Three students can use the words they have learned to identify 23 onsets and 20 rimes for word building and decoding. As students progress through the three levels, they are able to read 405 words with the goal of becoming more independent in their ability to decode unknown words.

PublicSchoolWORKS Adds New Attachment Feature
To Reporting Systems

Feature allows for evidence in the form of pictures, documents and emails to be attached to safety reports for more detailed reporting

Cincinnati, Ohio – February 6, 2012 – PublicSchoolWORKS, a Cincinnati-based company that offers the one and only comprehensive, fully-automated risk management system available for schools, has added an Attachment Feature to its Staff Safety Reporting Systems, part of the award-winning EmployeeSafe Suite. EmployeeSafe is an automated online safety program that facilitates timely and consistent administration of safety training, compliance task management (drills, inspections, IAQ, etc.), accident management processes, MSDS compliance, hazard/near miss reporting and more.

The Attachment Feature allows school staff to attach documents, pictures and images to efficiently provide and communicate all relevant information to address staff safety reports and incident investigations helping quickly resolve safety issues. This quick action in turn can reduce injuries and damage to property along with workers’ compensation and other insurance costs.

With the new PublicSchoolWORKS’ Attachment Feature, staff can now add attachments to:
• Accident Reports
• Hazard Reports
• Near-Miss Reports
• Safety Suggestions
• Pest Reports

The Award-Winning EmployeeSafe Suite Staff Safety Reporting Systems improve safety by addressing concerns to prevent injuries or property damage, thereby helping to reduce the amount of money districts spend on staff accidents.
With the added Attachment Feature, safety managers can also look forward to a reduction in the time required to track, resolve, and document reported safety concerns.

According to Tom Strasburger, vice president of PublicSchoolWORKS, “It is imperative that administrators and staff have more time to focus on student education and still have a way to effectively manage, communicate and address safety concerns. Our system can reduce the time spent managing safety and compliance issues, thus providing more time for focusing on student learning. It gives teachers and administrators the peace of mind that safety concerns are being resolved. “
