Hear the why, how and how-to in this jam-packed session on enabling STEM for your students. First, award-winning futurist David Thornburg, founder of the Thornburg Center, will unearth the reasons why educators must make STEM a priority from a global perspective, and provide ideas to support your efforts. Next, former district-level administrator and funding expert Mona McCoy will provide concrete ideas on how you can find funding to implement STEM programs in your schools. And last, hear from two teachers, Jennifer Rosser and Kelly Crowley, who are in the classroom each day implementing STEM lessons and activities to engage and excite their students for further learning in the STEM fields.

David is Founder and Director of Global Operations for the Thornburg Center. He is an award-winning futurist and author focusing on computing and communication media, project-based learning, 21st Century skills, and open source software.
How – Mona McCoy – an expert look at the current implications of STEM and funding.
Mona spent 25 years in public and higher education as a teacher, curriculum specialist, college professor and federal programs director. She is president of Customized Educational Solutions, LLC, a cross-sector consulting firm to private industry and school districts. She regularly presents on grants and funding, and the reauthorizations of IDEA and ESEA.
Practical Application – Teachers Kelly Crowley and Jennifer Rosser from New Hanover will speak about their classroom experiences with STEM solutions.
Jennifer Rosser and Kelly Crowley are teachers in New Hanover, North Carolina. Jennifer received a double major in Elementary Education and Special Education from Boston University, has taught fifth grade in New Jersey, and now teaches 5th grade in North Carolina. She participates in national conversations about mathematics curriculum. She fell in love with the idea of data-driven decision making, and saw evidence that every student can learn, as long as they are provided with the right tools.
Kelly is in her 10th year as a classroom teacher, and now teaches 5th grade. She graduated from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 2001, and was one of the “go-getter” beginning teachers. She wants to teach in innovative ways and continuously encourages her teaching team to do the same.
