  • High school students win awards from Society of Manufacturing Engineers

    The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Education Foundation announced the winners of its annual Directors and Family Student Scholarships. The top award, the SME Family Scholarship, will provide four years' full tuition for high school senior Levi Gamble, of Ramona, Calif., to help fund his undergraduate degree in engineering. Monica Denis, a senior at Michigan's Kettering University, and Tristan Wagner, a senior at Oregon State University, each received the SME Education Foundation Directors Scholarship, a one-year award that will help fund the completion of their degrees. The winners were honored at the SME Annual Meeting and Leadership Luncheon, held at the Los Angeles Convention Center on March 26. [ Read More ]

  • ED's IES grants $1M to Quantum Simulations

    Quantum Simulations, Inc., a developer of artificial intelligence tutoring, assessment and professional development software has received a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education Institute of Education Sciences (IES) to develop new tutoring and assessment software for chemistry. Quantum currently offers 14 software modules covering introductory chemistry and applied mathematics. The additional grant funding will allow Quantum to develop additional new tutoring and assessment modules and further expand its content offering for high school, AP and college-level students.   • TI Foundation donates more than $1M to Texas university

    Texas Instruments Foundation has presented the University of North Texas' Dallas Campus with a $1.1 million grant to establish the TI Math Scholars program. The program's goal is to encourage more students, especially from underrepresented groups such as minorities and women, to seek bachelor's degrees in mathematics with math teacher certification. Students selected for this program must agree to teach in Dallas-area school districts for a minimum of two years upon graduation. The TI Math Scholars program will provide a focused degree plan in mathematics with high-quality instruction combined with direct student support initiatives – such as mentoring, conferences, seminars and internship opportunities – that will provide an enhanced educational experience. Full tuition and fees plus a book allowance of $500 per semester will be awarded to all full-time students enrolled in the program, which has a goal of 30 students for the 2007 fall semester.
