House rejects net neutrality rules

News.com reports that the House of Representatives dealt a bitter blow to the idea of net neutrality backed by Democrats as well as Google, eBay, and other technology companies. In a largely party-line 269-152 vote, House Republican leadership managed to reject an amendment to the Communications Opportunity, Promotion, and Enhancement act, which would support strict net neutrality guidelines. The debate over net neutrality began over the premise of whether broadband providers could outright block a given website. It has since changed to address the question of whether broadband providers could create a "fast lane" for preferred sites and content. The act in question is largely supported by Republicans and broadband providers, most notably Verizon and AT & T. Representative Ed Markey (D) laments the development, saying: "The future Sergey Brins, the future Marc Andreessens, of Netscape and Google ... are going to have to pay taxes to broadband providers." He added that this will "change the Internet for the rest of eternity." ...
