Schools have big plans for tiny music machine

Theage.com.au reports that in an Australian first, Victoria's Education Department has launched a pilot project in which a group of year 8 students at Heathmont College have been given iPods and Macintosh laptop computers. The project aims to test student engagement with technology, as well as learning and teaching both inside, and outside of school. Deborah Parkins, an English teacher at Heathmont, believes that the student-teacher relationship is changing, and that teachers can no longer stand at the front of the class and lecture to students. Rather, they have become more like guides. In addition, some students are so tech savvy, that they are finding new purposes of tech that they basically become teachers of teachers. As such, Ms. Parkins thinks that the iPod widens learning horizons because it can save video, audio, and class work to be carried away and accessed at a later time. Victorian Education Services Minster Jacinta Allan adds that "Harnessing in a classroom setting the excitement and enthusiasm of young people for these devices can make a big difference to learning." ...
