Online schools flunk audit

Denverpost.com reports that a state audit released by the Colorado Department of Education on Monday described a booming online education system that has poor student performance, poor accounting practices and little oversight of tax expenditures. One finding of the audit was that a Hope Co-Op Online Learning Academy that operated in a religious school, commingled $250,000 dollars with private tuition funds, which is in violation of the state's constitution. The audit also found that just 7 percent of 10th-graders enrolled in online schools could perform math up to their grade level, compared against 31 percent statewide. The audit team ultimately made 16 recommendations, and urged the Education Department to place a moratorium on new online schools until the problems with the system as it currently stands, is rectified...
