MIT debuts private friend-spotting program

Boston.com reports that the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has developed a new friend-spotting software program that debuted on the campus on Wednesday, Dec. 13. The program allows people benefits from sharing their location with others, without necessarily showing up on Big Brother's radar. The iFIND project turns laptops into something akin to a GPS unit that spots users down to the room they are sitting in, and then allows a user to share their location with friends, all without uploading personal information onto a centralized network. The program calculates the person's location using Wi-Fi access points, and then shares that information with selected individuals on a peer-to-peer basis. People will be able to connect with each other and chat, and eventually create profiles for themselves. However, the network will never be able to receive personal information...
