Firms fret about eMail security

The New York Times reports that an increasing number of internet-savvy workers are forwarding their office eMail to web-based eMail services such as Google, Yahoo, and Hotmail. Employers are not pleased, as they fear that potential security breaches and corporate secrets could leak out the "back door" of well-protected computer networks into the greater web environment. At the core of the problem are the contrasting needs between employer and employee. Company IT professionals fear that this security hole is huge, and just want to protect sensitive corporate information from prying eyes. However, employees are working remotely in greater numbers, and just want to access their eMail quickly an easily while on-the-go. While there haven't been any major corporate disasters stemming from this reality, experts say the security risks are legitimate. The less robust security systems of web-based mail could allow viruses and spyware to get through, which employees could unwittingly download, and infect the entire office network...
