HOMER: ILIAD, Winner Best Audio--2007 Benjamin Franklin Award™
LAS VEGAS, June 13, 2007--Just prior to the annual book convention in New York City, Parmenides Publishing won the 2007 Benjamin Franklin Award® for Best Audiobook in Adult Nonfiction for their audiobook publication of Homer´s ILIAD. The Award is presented each year by the Publishers Marketing Association at BookExpo America and recognizes editorial and design excellence in independent publishing.
The ILIAD (unabridged, 12 CDs/15 hrs, $42.00) is translated and narrated by Stanley Lombardo, Professor of Classics at the University of Kansas. A native of New Orleans, he is an award-winning translator and an acclaimed performer. The Introduction is written by noted classicist Tom Palaima from the University of Texas at Austin. Academy Award®-winning actress Susan Sarandon reads the Introduction and Synopses.
The New York Times called Lombardo´s translation of the ILIAD: "gripping ... Lombardo manages to be respectful of Homer´s dire spirit while providing some wonderfully fresh refashioning of his Greek. The result is a vivid and disarmingly hardbitten reworking of a great classic."
According to Publishers Weekly, who declared the ILIAD audiobook the winner of the 2006 Listen-Up Awards (Best Audio in Classics), "more than almost any other book, Homer´s Iliad is meant to be spoken aloud, so it´s a natural fit for audiobooks. With his fluid translation of ancient Greek into the rhythms of contemporary conversation, Lombardo has rendered the story of the final stretch of the Trojan War and its plethora of jealous, vengeful gods and warriors feasting, battling and endlessly speechifying, more boldly modern and recognizable than the remote marble tableaux conjured by most other versions ... Lombardo´s Iliad both sings to 21st century ears and holds true to Homer´s original vision; the blind bard would be proud."
