In Portland, Ore., a four-year program at John Marshall High School’s Technology Learning Center teaches students how to use multimedia-design software and hardware for real-world use in computerized information kiosks. Not only do students learn computer skills, but they also interact with the organizations for whom they design the projects; clients have included the Portland Trailblazers basketball team, an Indian reservation, and the U.S. Forestry Service.

The exposure to the business community also shows students the opportunities available to them after school when with the proper skills and education. The Portland school board is currently looking at plans to expand the program.
