Guidelines For Maximizing The Effectiveness Of Technology In Any School Setting

The MIS director for the DeKalb school system in Georgia outlines the program he employs to keep all members of the school system invested in its technology, from the students and teachers to the administrators and parents. The program falls into four categories: “integration” (requires use of technology in every curriculum), “access” (gives everyone equal opportunities to use technology), “proficiency” (establishes measures of technology literacy for students and teachers), and “support” (trains everyone to use the technology). More specifically, the school system developed strategies for three kinds of user:

  1. Students. Set up technology competency guidelines for each grade from pre-K to 12, integrate technology into the core curriculum, draft hardware and software standards for each grade, and determine specific software titles.

  2. Staff. Set up competency guidelines for staff, make technology part of instructional job requirements, set standard software and hardware by job title, and develop teacher training programs.

  3. Parents and community stakeholders. Set up “Family Technology Resource Centers” (FTRCs) that bring together students, parents, and other community members, develop curricula based on community needs, and seek the cooperation of local businesses, foundations, volunteer groups, and government agencies.
