Scantron Quality Computers Inc. (SQC), a top reseller of educational software and hardware, has launched an online catalog the company hopes will serve as a one-stop shop for schools. With real-time pricing and the ability to track an order from the time you place it through its shipment and delivery, said general manager Mike Sottrel, “we feel that this truly will revolutionize and streamline how school districts purchase their software.”
The online service debuted Oct. 1. One feature of particular interest to school districts, Sottrel said, is the site’s ability to process school purchase orders, a function set to be added by the end of October. Another feature is its option of building or network site licenses for many of its products.
“About 90 percent of our business is from schools or districts,” Sottrel said. “We designed our online catalog with the needs of schools in mind.”
The site gives educators the chance to browse through thousands of popular software titles from the likes of Microsoft, The Learning Company, Broderbund, Knowledge Adventure, Edmark, Brighter Paths, Adobe, Gamco, Mindscape, Roger Wagner, Tom Snyder, Disney, and more, Sottrel said.
A search engine lets you search for software titles by name, publisher, subject/ grade level, or keyword. Titles include screen shots and product descriptions, Sottrel said, and SQC also will be adding teacher reviews and downloadable demos to its site soon to help educators make informed purchasing decisions.
As you add or remove items from your online shopping cart, the site displays a running total for your purchases, reflecting real-time prices. Education pricing is built into the system, Sottrel said, but if you need a custom quote on large quantity orders, you can call or eMail the sales staff directly.
A special “Order Tracking” feature lets you instantly track UPS, Federal Express, or DHL shipments online, Sottrel said, from the time your order was placed through its delivery to your school.
“This will give schools a great deal of flexibility–at their convenience, they can go online and check whether an order has been shipped or if it’s on back order,” Sottrel said. “Also, they can get competitive pricing at any given time.”
Perhaps the most unique feature of SQC’s online catalog is the company’s ability to customize the catalog’s interface for a particular school, Sottrel said.
“We offer schools the ability to put our catalog up on their web site,” he said. “Then, if a school district uses a certain company’s brand of software, we can tailor the catalog interface to feature that company’s software. Teachers and parents will be able to access the site and will have a direct connection to the software being used by their district.”
