Schools may be able to save a significant amount on energy costs simply by turning off their computers when they are not in use.

Monitors especially should be turned off whenever possible because monitors alone account for 80 percent of the energy a computer uses. All computers should be shut down at the end of the day.

Another money-saving tip is to use “Energy Star” computers and peripherals, which can save you up to 50 percent on energy costs.
