Instructors who employ a teaching philosophy in which they serve as guide instead of lecturer are more likely to incorporate the Internet and Web-based instruction into their lessons, according to a recent survey by a professor in Cal-Irvine’s education department.

This newer method of teaching, dubbed “constructivism,” allows the teacher to facilitate learning through team-work and solving problems that don’t necessarily have one correct answer.

Instead of being lectured on a pre-set group of facts and skills and later being tested on them, students explore a topic at their own pace and on their own initiative while being directed by the teacher.

Some critics of the approach fear that the use of the Internet with this method of instruction will lead to wasted time and little retention of content. Proponents of a more traditional approach would like to see the Internet in classrooms as an occasional research tool.
