This site from the National Parks Service aims to help students understand the Battle of Gettysburg: the major actions of the armies during each day of the battle, as well as the motives and experiences of several of its participants. The site offers readings, maps, photos, and activities for students. In “Setting the Stage: A Historical Context,” students are given the background leading up to Gettysburg, considered by most to be the turning point of the Civil War. Detailed maps and first-hand accounts of the fighting which claimed 51,000 lives in three days are available for students who wish to immerse themselves in the cultural, historical, and political atmosphere which led up to this ugly day in American history.
