In December, The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. Department of Education launched the Figure This! web site, a initiative to encourage middle-school students to improve their mathematical problem-solving skills. The Figure This! site is updated weekly to provide fun and challenging questions in a wide range of mathematics disciplines. Recent examples include working with a map to chart as many paths as possible to a particular destination, and choosing the best combination of 15-cent and 33-cent stamps to make $1.77 in postage. Figure This!, which is designed to encourage parents to work with their children as much as it is for educators, is a joint project of the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Learning First Alliance, and The Widmeyer-Baker Group.
