A web-based service called Report-it.com is gaining national recognition as an early detection and prevention tool for improving school safety, and the Oakdale, N.Y.-based company that offers the service touts it as a way to break down the “conspiracy of silence” that exists in most schools today.

Report-it.com is an anonymous student helpline. The company creates a web site for each participating school and offers a password for each student. Students can fill out a form anonymously from any computer detailing the nature of the threat, and the district designates up to four administrators who will be notified.

The company charges a one-time set-up fee for the web site, plus an annual subscription fee of $365 per high school or middle school building and $182.50 per elementary school building.
