A new online directory of free internet services and internet access sites has been published by a coalition of libraries, nonprofit groups, and AOL Time Warner. The directory lists about 20,000 providers of equipment, internet connections, and training that are accessible at little or no cost.
The idea behind the directory is to bridge the “digital divide” by helping people find these services near to their homes. Users of the system can enter their request for certain types of services (such as libraries offering free internet access) and their zip code, and find out what is in their area.
The information can be found online at ConnectNet.org (in English) and Conectado.org (in Spanish). It also can be accessed through a toll-free phone number, (866) 583-1234, with English- and Spanish-speaking operators.
