The U.S. Senate has passed an amendment to a bill that would appropriate $4.75 million to create a national research center to help school districts assess security problems and find ways to address them.

The amendment, sponsored by Sens. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., and Tim Hutchinson, R-Ark., adds a School Security Technology and Resource Center to the Better Education for Students and Teachers Act.
