On March 5, First Lady Laura Bush hosted the White House Conference on Preparing Tomorrow’s Teachers. This Department of Education web page contains information related to the conference and the topic of teacher preparation in general. An overview of the conference agenda is available, as well as a fact sheet addressing the Bush administration’s commitment to getting a quality teacher in every classroom. An online Policy Book contains guidance for school leaders on improving teacher quality and enhancing the attractiveness of the profession. The site also features the president’s remarks at the launch of his Quality Teacher Initiative, and the event’s opening remarks by First Lady Laura Bush, a former schoolteacher. Finally, visitors to the site can access all of the presentations given at the conference. Presenters included Grover Whitehurst, assistant secretary of the Education Department’s Office of Educational Research and Improvement, as well as several university-level professors of education, lobbyists from teacher’s unions, superintendents, teachers, and education researchers.
