The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Smithsonian’s museum of modern and contemporary art, has developed this site to help students learn about different types of art while providing them with an opportunity to explore the nature of their own artistic creativity. On the site, students can browse through an online collection of paintings and search through a database containing thousands of currently and previously displayed pieces. Each entry is accompanied by a title, detailed photos, and a brief historical explanation. To explore their own creative drive, students also can take part in the site’s Art Interactive function. This latest feature allows kids to research different types of sculpture and encourages each visitor to build his or her own pieces of modern art through a colorful online design program. Once a student is satisfied with his or her design, the student can choose to display the original sculpture inside the museum itself or see what it might look like outside in the Hirshhorn’s modern sculpture garden. For teachers, the site includes a comprehensive listing of current workshops and upcoming talks taking place at the museum. It also includes dates and times of special exhibits currently on display and provides information needed to arrange personal visits and class field trips.
