The Washington Post reports that three District of Columbia school officials were fired on the opening day of school because they had failed to schedule all of the necessary classes and room assignments for hundreds of students at Eastern Senior High School. The scheduling problems led to a chaotic scene, and police and security guards had to be called in to send many students home. The decision to fire those responsible for the error was approved by incoming superintendent Clifford B. Janey. Among the officials fired were principal Norman S. Smith Jr. and information technology specialist Henry Thompson.
