The Golden Apple Foundation is a Chicago-based nonprofit organization that promotes excellence in preK-12 education by publicly honoring excellent local teachers. Each year since 1986, the foundation has chosen 10 outstanding teachers to receive this award. Recipients become lifetime members of the Golden Apple Academy of Educators. Winners also receive a paid, fall-term sabbatical at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., a $2,500 stipend, and an Apple computer. To be considered for a Golden Apple Award, a teacher first must be nominated. Nominated teachers must teach full-time at a public or private school in Cook, Lake, or DuPage Counties in Illinois.
