In a commentary for his local newspaper, the North County Times of Escondio, Calif., Dick Morgan complains that today’s schools are cheating students of the rigorous education he received as a youngster. Morgan points to the state’s efforts to let students take math tests with calculators as an indication that standards have broken down. He also worries that keyboarding is being stressed more than the written English language. Morgan fears that “With spell-checking, dictionaries and thesauruses online, the ability to use the English language will be lost altogether.”
