Florida Today of Melbourne, Fla., reports that a local charter school will be giving handhelds with keyboards to sixth- and seventh-graders, while its eighth-graders will be getting laptops. River’s Edge Charter School is breaking new ground, because no other school in its district has offered laptops on a widespread basis. The laptops are expected to make a big difference for students in a school with a high percentage of students living in poverty. Some 85 percent of the students at the school are receiving free or reduced-price lunches.
