Survey: Officials not afraid to flex Patriot Act’s library muscle

The New York Times reports on a study that asked librarians to report whether or not federal law enforcement officials had requested information about reading materials checked out of their libraries. The study found that this practice, allowable under the Patriot Act, is in fact happening on a fairly widespread scale, despite Bush administration officials’ insistence that it is a rare practice.
