The Appalachian News-Express of Pikeville, Ky., reports that local Pike County Central High School maintains an entirely student-staffed help desk, thanks to a seven-year-old daily class that allows students to offer tech support for course credit. The help desk is run like those in the business world, with students responsible for computers throughout the district. Students learn to manage the district’s servers, printers and wireless carts. The newspaper reports that since it started in 1998, the help desk has handled 50,000 calls and has become a model for other districts around the nation.
